Description

The Lagoon Nebula (M8) is an emission nebula in the constellation Sagittarius and a favourite among southern hemisphere astrophotographers. The nebula is around 5,000 light-years away and around 130 light-years in width. It is composed primarily of hydrogen much of it ionized by radiation from the nearby massive star Herschel 36. It is also a star-forming region or stellar nursery. The integration time on this target was shorter than I usually go for but we haven't been having much good weather lately being in the middle of winter. I was pleasantly surprised at the level of detail though for such a short period.
